RALEIGH -- After the tragic events on September 11th, Triangle executives Danny Rosin and Phil Gruber decided that sitting back and watching events unfold was not enough.
"Danny and I decided we wanted to do something," said Gruber, who works at RPG Benefits Solutions. "Everybody was trying to think of something to do."
As a result of their efforts -- and 55 other people on their hardworking committee -- a benefit concert is scheduled for Saturday November 3rd called Band Together For Our Heroes. The bands Blue Dogs and Freeloader will be giving a concert while attendees can enjoy food and drinks during the show at the NC Museum of History in Raleigh. The concert will be held on Saturday Nov. 3rd from 7:30pm to midnight.
People Coming Together
"We got 55 people together to do something to help -- to do anything we could," said Gruber. "It's been a team effort."
The concert has an impressive array of sponsors including Blue Cross and Blue Shield as the presenting sponsor. Altogether, the organizers hope to raise around $40,000 for charities in New York and Washington DC.
"There are companies donating without even attending the event from as far away as South Carolina," Gruber added.
Donations from the event will be hand-delivered to the NY Police & Fire Widow's & Children's Benefit Fund and the DC Survivors Fund.
"We chose the [charities] that gave the most money to the families of the rescue workers and that had low or no overhead," said Gruber. "We made sure that we picked at least one New York fund and one DC fund."
According to the event organizers, the outpouring of generosity from lcoal firms has been tremendous, as many companies were looking for a way to help after the attacks.
"We just wanted an avenue to help out," said committee member Skip Mangum of Strategic Technologies.
Stunned By Tragedies
Although the organizers are quick to point out that the benefit has been a team effort, one of the reasons they were able to raise so much money so quickly has been because of the work done by promotional products company BrandFuel and their clients.
Danny Rosin, one of the founders of BrandFuel, came up with the idea for a concert with friend Phil Gruber at RPG Benefits. During their own time and as part of the company-wide efforts, BrandFuel employees like Rosen, Bill Fiveash, and many others have been working on the event around the clock.
"Danny's company has just been incredible," said Gruber. "Half his employees have been working on this full time."
Rosin said that when the terrorist attacks took place, people in the BrandFuel office were stunned, as they huddled around a radio to get the latest news.
"People had tears in their eyes," said Rosin.
Although they did not know any of the victims personally, like most people in the US, they felt deeply affected by the attack.
"We're all Americans," said Rosin.
A Triangle-Wide Effort
Rosin is quick to give the credit to many others however, for the work behind the event, including people at dozens of other companies around the Triangle.
"I've never seen [such a] creative and energetic and supportive group of folks together," said Rosin about the 55 member committee. "It was a success before it even got started."
Companies represented on the organizing committee include almost every type of business from law firms to software companies to banks to accounting firms.
Rosin said it didn't take long for companies and people to want to get involved and donate time, money, or resources for the event.
"It's turned into a community-wide effort," said Rosin. "People are saying 'We want to be a part of something.' "
Huge Gathering Of Hope
The benefit concert promises to be an event to remember. In addition to great music by the Blue Dogs and Freeloader, drinks and food donated by different companies will be provided to guests.
The location will be a unique concert venue since the event will be held in the NC Museum of History in downtown Raleigh.
In addition, Rosin said the organizers are trying to arrange to fly a couple of NY firefighters down to the event to meet the crowd firsthand.
With all of the hard work done in such a short amount of time, organizers, sponsors, and concert goers have helped to bring together people in the Triangle for a great cause.
They also have shown that hope lives on in the hearts of kind and generous people across the country.
"Everybody's done so much," said Rosin. "It's amazing."
